This paper explores the meanings of the word, "charge" in the contexts of hymn "A charge to keep I have." By considering the history of the composition of the hymn, and various definitions of the word itself, "charge" comes to signify the act of faith and praising that faith at the same time. A "charge" assumes both an act of caring, and the assumption of a responsibility, a burden.
