The author notes that identity theft and identity fraud have been defined as types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another persons personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain. In more specific terms, identity theft involves the fraudulent use of a Social Security number, bank account or credit card number, telephone calling card number, or other valuable identifying data in order to remove funds out of the victims bank or financial accounts, or to use their credit card accounts to fraudulently charge merchandise.
