Remarkably, Fiske reports that 118 of 125 of one of his classes were once dressed in jeans. He also points out that their physical attributes, their functionality, is a precondition of popularity but not a complete explanation. Popularity, indeed iconographic status, in the world of popular culture has far more to do with image and perception-marketing-than it does with physical reality.
