This paper discusses the history of Sitting Bull and why he became a symbol and an icon for later generations, noting that the stories about Sitting Bull often depict him in bigger-than-life terms, and in many ways this depiction reflects his importance to his own people and the importance invested in him by the white community, based on his fame from the Little Big Horn and his time with Bufalo Bill as well as his leadership of the Sioux.
