This essay will examine the history of the European instrument the piano, with particular reference to its use in the Romantic period of the 19th century in Chopin's Nocturne No.2. As will be seen, Chopin's use of the piano reflects the evolutionary history of this remarkably versatile instrument which is, at least in part, responsible for its enduring popularity in Western music. 5 pgs.
