This is an essay on John McPhee's article (and later a chapter in "The Control of Nature"), "Los Angeles Against the Mountains." It attempts to describe the geological event known as debris flow, its genesis amidst seemingly unrelated characteristics of the surrounding San Gabriel mountains, plate tectonics, climate and flora and the numerous methods employed by residents in spite of numerous failings.
