Being Lost is the Same, Regardless of Kind, in Lost in Translation.

Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation represents a variation on the Stranger in a Strange Land theme – we as westerners are confronted with the realities of a world we cannot fully access, and certainly cannot successfully apply a western translation to it. At its core, this is a story of the ironies inherent in any such situation – the main characters, with a common language between them, but not with the world they inhabit, are forced into a bubble of isolation even in one of the most populous and densely packed cities in the world, Tokyo. In this context, being “lost” is explored from every facet, from the literal to the figurative to the metaphorical. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the nature of being lost as it is explored through the character of Bob Harris.
