This paper will examine the manner and degree to which that Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs (aka Linda Brent) can serve as an accurate and useful representation of the historical period that it represents. Ultimately, the paper will argue that the novel is a capable and poignant representation of the trials that slaves had to endure during the existence of slavery in the US South.
