If there were a feminist novel, "Breath, Eyes, Memory" would truly be it. We see the troubled reality of oppression through the eyes of the character of Sophie, who makes us too well aware of the horrible crimes committed against women in Haitian society, crimes that have their legacy in the social construction of values that colonialism produced.
